Meet the Founder: How Steve Hyman is Powering Canada’s Green Economy

Every big move starts with a spark of curiosity. For Steve Hyman, the Founder and President of Green Planet Bio-Fuels, that spark happened in a kitchen.

Before he became a leader in the Canadian renewable energy sector, Steve worked in restaurant kitchens, completing a rigorous culinary apprenticeship in some of Toronto’s most respected restaurants. It was here that he first noticed the sheer volume of used cooking oil being discarded.

His path took a turn when he began experimenting with converting that waste into fuel for his 1970’s VW Bus. What started as a personal passion for innovation and environmental responsibility in 2008 has since grown into a trusted service provider for nearly 6,000 food service locations and facilities across Southern Ontario. Experimenting with converting a diesel vehicle to run on used cooking oil has evolved into a thriving business that helps restaurants across the province contribute to a greener future.

Our Mission: A Greener Future for Canada

Our mission at Green Planet Bio-Fuels is to champion the circular economy by converting food production byproducts, which would otherwise be waste, into clean, renewable energy. We partner with businesses to fundamentally change their material management, transforming a liability into a valuable resource.

By converting used cooking oil, grease trap materials, and organic byproducts into biodiesel, we reduce environmental impact while creating measurable value for clients and the communities they serve. Our solutions support lower carbon emissions and decrease our reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

Our Mission: Powering the Circular Economy

At Green Planet Bio-Fuels, we understand that good for the planet is good for business. Our mission is to transform byproducts from food production into clean, renewable energy solutions. We help businesses rethink their waste management, turning organic materials into resources that support a sustainable, circular economy.

By converting used cooking oil and grease trap materials into biodiesel, we create measurable value for our clients. These solutions support lower carbon emissions and help reduce the nation’s reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

Not only do we specialize in collecting used cooking oil from restaurants, but we also buy their used oil, providing compensation or payment options for the collected waste to our customers. Our clients are pleased with our services, which is why we implemented a Referral Program, offering them $100 per referral.

Our dedication to fostering the circular economy wouldn’t be anything without our charitable heart. We also provide an option for payments to be donated to a local charity, such as Real Food For Real Kids.
